Unusual Places to Visit in Texas this Summer

Texas is a more varied state than is usually credited. If you’re looking for some truly unusual and surreal places to visit within Texas this summer in your Classic Chevy, try visiting one of these unique spots on your road trip.

Palo Duro Canyon State Park

Known as the “Grand Canyon of Texas,” Palo Duro Canyon, located near Amarillo, is a sight to behold. While everything in Texas is usually bigger, this is one case that proves that wrong. It’s actually the second largest canyon in the United States behind, unsurprisingly, Arizona’s Grand Canyon. At “only” 120 miles long and 20 miles wide, it’s nowhere close to the Grand Canyon’s 277 miles length and 18 miles width. Don’t let that discourage you from a visit, however. Palo Duro Canyon is one of Texas’s (and the country’s) most beautiful landscapes.

Hamilton Pool Reserve

A remarkable natural pool about 23 miles west of Austin, it was formed thousands of years ago when the dome of an underground river collapsed. There’s no sight quite like it: there’s an overhanging crescent of rock that provides natural shade to the pool as a waterfall cascades into the pool. The rock formation creates a natural acoustic chamber, which amplifies the roar of the falls and drives out other sounds. The result is a shaded, cool area to sit and relax.

Caverns of Sonora

Millions of years ago, perhaps as long ago as five million, the stunning natural calcite crystal formations of the Caverns of Sonora began to form 155 feet below the surface of Texas. The caverns glow a pearlescent white under the glow of lights, transforming the caverns into one of the planet’s most indescribably beautiful caves.

Enchanted Rock

Near Fredericksburg (which is worth a visit on its own merits), Enchanted Rock is a monolithic pink granite rock that covers 640-acres of land and rises 1,825 feet above sea level. You can actually hike to the top for an unparalleled view of the surrounding countryside.
