End of the Year Road Trip Bucket List Texas Destinations

Dallas downtown skyline in the evening

If you’re looking for a great place to take a road trip in Texas in the new year, hit up these bucket list destinations and pick something that you haven’t done before. Look at the Mystery Lights, find some dinosaur bones, find some gems and more. Before you head out, be sure to have your vehicle checked or serviced at Classic Chevrolet.

Possum Kingdom

This trip takes just under 3 hours from Dallas and if you love outdoor activities, this is a great place. Pack the tent or make a reservation for a cabin and enjoy scuba diving, hiking and more. Be sure to bring your camera so you can get some great pictures of the wildlife.

Mineral Wells

Visit the home of “Crazy Water,” water from Mineral Wells. Supposedly, the water from this spring cured a woman of dementia in 1881. Be sure to visit the haunted hotel in the middle of The Baker. The hotel was built after the bottled water boom in the 1920s and was a place for rich people to go for a spa day. The property was abandoned in the 1950s and is haunted by ghosts from the past.

Muenster

If you want some of the best German food, head over to Muenster. The town was founded in 1889 and the mostly German population still holds. Pick up traditional German sausage at Fischer’s Meat Market and visit the wineries just outside of town. You can also visit Bayer’s Kolonialwaren for donuts, kolaches, klobasnek, and strudel.

Roma

Visit Roma, the most historic city in Texas. Over 30 buildings were built before 1900 and are located in the Roma National Historic district. The town is located on the Rio Grande and you have easy access to Mexico. You’ll need a long weekend for this trip though, as it is just under eight hours from Dallas.

Dinosaur Valley State Park

Head over to Glen Rose to visit Dinosaur Valley State Park. The park is located on the Paluxy River and features dinosaur prints and tons of dinosaur-themed things. The sandstone, limestone and mudstone that were deposited in the area about 113 million years ago are part of the shoreline of what was an ancient sea. Learn more about dinosaurs while you have a relaxing trip to the area.

Marfa’s Mystery Lights

Drive to Marfa to see the mystery lights. They usually appear in the clear night sky between Marfa and Paisano Pass. The lights show up in the southwest as you’re facing the Chinanti Mountains. The first time these lights were spotted was circa 1883 – and people still have not figured out what causes the lights.

Hunt for Natural Topaz

Go over to Mason County to hunt for natural topaz – the state gem of Texas. You’ll find the gem in ravines and streambeds in Mason County. Many of the ranches in the area will allow you to find gems – and will even set you up with all of the equipment you need to hunt for Topaz, though most are closed for deer season.

Enchanted Rock

Visit the Enchanted Rock State Natural Area to see this huge pink granite dome that has its own legend. The Comanche, Tonkawa and Apache tribes all believe the area is magical. The rock creaks and groans at night. While scientists say its from the rock cooling down at night from the heat of the sun, the native tribes believe the noises were from ghost fires.

Must-Have Accessories for your Chevy this Winter

ext_g7p_deg01x920

Whether you just picked up a new vehicle from Classic Chevrolet or you are still driving your current Chevy, you may want some accessories for your vehicle. Whether you have a truck, SUV, sedan or coupe, these accessories will be helpful in the snow or in the cold.

Windshield Snow Shade

Make cleaning the snow and ice off your windshield easier by installing a snow shade while you’re parked. It will also keep dangerous ultraviolet rays from cracking and fading the interior of your vehicle at the same time.

Traction Weight for Trucks

Driving a pickup in the winter could be challenging because the light rear end slides on slippery snow and ice. Add a traction weight to the bed of the truck to help stabilize the rear during inclement weather.

Snowplow Kit

This kit is great for your Chevy truck if you have a long driveway to plow or if you live on a back road that gets plowed last or not at all. The snowplow will help you get out of your driveway when the snow is too deep and dangerous to drive through.

Remote Start System

If you have a vehicle that did not come with a remote start, you could add your own remote start. If you remember to leave the defroster on when you leave the vehicle, you can start it about 10 minutes before you’re ready to leave so it’s nice and warm and so that it is easier to clear the windows.

Wireless Salt Spreader

Add a salt spreader to your winter vehicle accessories to spread salt on driveways that you need to keep clean. This is especially helpful if you have a long driveway that you would like to keep clear. You could even pretreat the driveway ahead of time to keep the snow and ice from building up too much.

5 Reasons Getting a Chevy is Better than a Black Friday Deal

screen-shot-2016-11-23-at-2-57-53-pm

Black Friday is getting to be more pervasive than ever. It’s invaded the weekend after and is encroaching into Thanksgiving Day itself. Why go through all the hassle at an electronics store or a department store when you could come to Classic Chevrolet instead and get the king of deals: a new Chevy.

Here’s why getting a Chevy is better than any Black Friday Deal.

1. No Waiting in Lines

Black Friday means lines. Lots of lines, out in the chill of morning with no guarantee of success. When you come to Classic Chevy, you won’t have to worry about lines just to get to test drive a model or to talk to a sales associate. You simply get to do what you came to do: buy a Chevy.

2. You Don’t Have to Wake Up Early

With deals and specials that last all day (regardless of whether it’s Black Friday or not), you don’t have to go to bed super early, set an alarm, and eat breakfast on the road. Wake up when you’re good and ready — our inventory will be standing by!

3. Supplies Aren’t Limited

With our huge inventory, there’s no worry that you’re missing out. Most Black Friday deals, you have to ask yourself, “will there be any left once I get my chance?” With Classic Chevy, there’s always another car, truck, or SUV that’s sure to please.

4. No Doors to Bust Down

Hey, we’re a dealership… just drive onto the lot, no doors involved! Seriously though, come early or come late, we’ll be glad to help.

5. You Get to Leave in a Brand New Chevy

The best part of shopping for a car is getting to leave the lot in that car. Whether you head home for the day or wade into the melee of Black Friday shopping, you get to do it in the comfort and convenience of a new Chevrolet.

2017 Chevy Bolt a Top Contender

screen-shot-2016-11-22-at-1-36-22-am

The 2017 Chevy Bolt EV has been named a Green Car Reports 2017 Best Car to Buy Nominee in large part because it is the first 200+ mile range mass-produced electric car in the world. And that’s kind of a big deal.

Electric vehicles are only slowly gaining traction in the States, and that’s mainly because Americans need their cars to be able to take them hundreds of miles in a go. While most of the world is fine with an “urban” car (one that can putter about a city), the U.S. needs something with more range.

That’s what makes the Chevy Bolt EV such an exciting prospect. You can get that electric and green vehicle you want without sacrificing the range of your travels.

The specs that make this possible are a 60-kilowatt-hour battery pan under the floor and rear seat, which powers a 150-kilowatt electric motor capable of producing 200-horsepower to the front wheels.

The pricing, before incentives, is a reasonable $37,500, which is reduced by a fairly large amount once those incentives are secured.

Our 3 Favorite Thanksgiving Dessert Recipes

Homemade Hot Apple Crisp & Ice Cream. Cinnamon, oatmeal and walnuts used in the recipe.

With Thanksgiving almost here, we’d like to focus on our favorite part of the meal: dessert. Sure, it may be difficult to reach the final course with any room left in your stomach, but the reward for doing so could be one of these decadent and delicious recipes.

Homemade Nutmeg Cheesecake

What you’ll need:

  • 4 eggs
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 2 pounds fresh cream cheese (room temperature)
  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter (melted)
  • 1/4 teaspoon almond extract
  • 1 3/4 cups sugar
  • 1 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt

Cooking instructions:

  1. Brush a 9-inch springform pan with half of the melted butter. Place it in the freezer for about 10 minutes to harden.
  2. Once the butter has hardened, apply another thick coat.
  3. Move your oven rack to the lowest position and preheat to 350 degrees.
  4. Apply a paddle attachment to your mixer and beat the cream cheese until it turns into a fluffy and smooth consistency.
  5. Beat the nutmeg, sugar, extracts and salt into the cream cheese mixture.
  6. Add the eggs into the mixture one at a time.
  7. Pour the cream cheese mixture into the prepared pan and place the pan on top of a double-layer of aluminum foil. Make sure there is at least 3 inches of foil around the pan, then fold the aluminum around the sides of the pan (not over the top of the cake).
  8. Fill a roasting pan with 1 inch of hot water. Place the foil wrapped cake in the roasting pan, so water does not overflow or seep into the cake.
  9. Bake for 1.5 hours or until the top of the cake is golden brown.
  10. Take the pan out of the water bath and let it cool for 15 minutes, then refrigerate uncovered for 2 hours.
  11. Once the cake has cooled, remove it from the pan by placing a large plate over the cake and flipping the cake onto the plate. Tap the pan to help the cake fall.
  12. Serve and enjoy.

  • 1 cup oatmeal
  • 1 1/2 cups flour
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 3/4 cup light brown sugar (packed)

Cooking instructions:

  1. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees.
  2. Butter a 9-inch by 14-inch by 2-inch oval baking dish.
  3. Peel, core and slice the apples into large wedges.
  4. Place the apples in a large bowl and combine them with the juices, sugar, spices and zests. Pour the entire combination in the baking dish.

  6. Scatter the entire mixture on top of the apple base.

Top Accessories to Add to Your Chevy

chevyday

The accessories you choose for your vehicle depends on the type of vehicle you are driving – or the type you intend on buying or leasing from Classic Chevy. You can make your Chevy your own with certain accessories – or you can make your vehicle more practical.

Trucks

Pick up a bed extender to add an extra 2 feet to the bed of your truck. These come in handy when you need to haul 8-foot lumber in a 6-foot bed. The bed extender fits over the open tailgate and keeps things from falling out of the bed.

Bedliners and mats keep the inside of the bed from being scratched up from the things you haul. They also keep things from sliding around in the back.

If you add a toolbox to your bed, you may want to add a bed step so that you can reach into the center of the box without having to climb in the bed of the truck.

One of the neatest accessories for a Silverado, especially if you like to camp or go hunting, is a sport tent. The tent is water- resistant and converts the bed into a camper. The tent features a waterproof floor and is made specifically for the Silverado bed.

Cars

Cars have limited space so a roof rack is a good addition if you are constantly trying to cram big things in the back seat or the cargo area. Choose from cargo management items to better organize the trunk, remote start if your vehicle didn’t come equipped with it, license plate holders, a spoiler kit, window deflectors and splash guards. Interior accessories include door sill plates, floor mats and pedal covers.

No matter what you drive, you should have a good first aid kit and a roadside assistance package in the event of an emergency. You can also pick these items up at our accessory shop.

Chevy Wins Two Engine Awards

1-8-16-EngineAwards

If you are in the market for a new vehicle and you’d like something that looks great, gets decent gas mileage and has one of the best engines out there, stop by Classic Chevrolet to test drive the 2016 Chevrolet Camaro. And, if you want something great for commuting, has an engine that is great enough to win awards and gets excellent gas mileage, visit our showroom to test drive the 2016 Chevrolet Volt.

2016 Chevrolet Camaro

The Camaro features a brand new 3.6-liter V-6 engine; and this engine made WardsAuto’s “Ward’s 10 Best Engines” list. The company reviewed engines and compared them with data for engines that are similar to the winners. WardsAuto looked at 31 engines across 11 different auto manufacturers for new technology, fuel efficiency, power and refinement.

The V-6 features advanced technology including cylinder deactivation, which increases fuel efficiency. This engine makes 335 horsepower and 285 pound-feet of torque; and these are the highest power ratings for a naturally aspirated V-6 engine in this segment. The active fuel management system cuts out two cylinders when you don’t need them to increase fuel economy. Furthermore, the Camaro features noise-reducing features including a new cam drive system.

2016 Chevrolet Volt

The new Volt features a Voltec propulsion system with zero range anxiety. The system features a range-extending engine, the drive unit, a battery and power electronics. You’ll be able to drive about 53 miles on electric power only and have a total driving range of over 420 miles, giving you over 1,000 miles between the times you have to visit the gas station.

This year’s drive unit is about 12 percent more efficient and it dropped 100 pounds when compared to the first generation. Because the Volt uses both motors, it has a 19 percent improvement in acceleration when under electric power. It takes 2.6 seconds to go from zero to 30 mph; and it shows a 7 percent improvement in acceleration from zero to 60 mph, which takes 8.4 seconds.

The gas engine is a 1.5-liter engine with direct injection and it runs on regular unleaded fuel. The battery is an 18.4 kWh battery with revised cell chemistry; and it features 192 cells instead of the 288 cells in the previous year’s model. Though the cells were decreased, saving 21 pounds, storage capacity increased.

What We Know About the 2017 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1

8-17-2015-2017ChevyCamaroZL1

If you have been waiting for the new 2017 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1, you’ve still got a bit of a wait, but it will be at Classic Chevrolet as soon as it makes its debut. For those who have the need for speed, this vehicle looks like it may have bigger wheels and aerodynamic bits, both upgrades from the sixth generation muscle car.

The newest model will have a different body kit which includes a lower front fascia, a rear spoiler, and may even have a hood scoop. The hood scoop is a guess as Chevrolet hasn’t yet removed the camouflage. Another difference is the four tail pipes that poke out of the rear of the Camaro; and these are larger than the tail pipes on the Camaro SS.

The 2017 model year ZL1 features the same architecture as the Cadillac ATS, which means that it’s a lot lighter than the 2015 model year ZL1. If Chevy puts the 6.2-liter LT4 supercharged engine in it, not only will the Camaro get a bump up in horsepower, but that horsepower will have a faster time slip because of the drop in weight. This engine in the Corvette currently makes 650 horsepower; however, it still remains to be seen if Chevrolet will use the same engine or a version of it. Even if the horsepower is bumped up to just 600, it’s a 20-horsepower increase over the outgoing ZL1.

It is expected that the 2017 Camaro ZL1 will debut in early 2016, possibly at the Detroit Auto Show. It will be released sometime in late 2016, after the new Camaro debuts.
