North American Car of the Year Accolades

General Motors took the North American Car of the Year for car and truck categories this year. The Chevrolet Silverado and the Chevrolet Corvette Stingray, both available at Classic Chevy, won for their categories as announced at a Dec. 13, 2013 new conference held at the North American International Auto Show.

A jury of 49 automotive journalists from Canada and the United States voted on vehicles this year. This is the 21st year of the North American Car of the Year award. Most awards are given by a single media outlet, but this award is given by journalists from different media outlets. The journalists represent television, magazines, newspapers, radio and web sites.

The North American Car of the Year award recognizes the most outstanding vehicles of the year. The jury votes on several factors including comfort, innovation, safety, design, driver satisfaction, handling and value for the dollar. The Stingray was awarded 211 points. The next vehicle was quite far from the Stingray – the Mazda3 received 185 points. An even larger spread separated second and third place. The Cadillac CTS received 94 points.

This is not the first time the Corvette won this award; it won in 1998. This is also the sixth time a General Motors vehicle won the award.

In the truck category, the Silverado garnered 219 points. The Jeep Cherokee came in second, trailing by 45 points with a score of 174. The Acura MDX trailed the leading Silverado by 122 points with a score of 97. The Silverado is the fourth truck win for General Motors and the second win for this model – the Silverado previously won in 2007.
